Privacy
What we publish
Business names, license numbers, license classes and specialties, business city, and counts of permits by year, category, zip code and map cell. All of it comes from public records published by Arlington County and Loudoun County and the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation.
What we never publish
- Property owners' and applicants' names. Owner names in Arlington's record are used only to decide whether an owner is an individual or a company, and are then discarded. The names of the people who filed Loudoun permits are never stored.
- Street addresses of permitted jobs. Jobs appear only as counts by zip code or as shaded map cells of about 0.7 square kilometres, and only where there are 3 or more jobs.
- Private individuals as contractors. Names in the contractor field that read as a private person and hold no Virginia license are not published.
- Contractors' phone numbers, email addresses or street addresses.
What we collect from visitors
Nothing that identifies you. This site has no accounts, no cookies of its own and no advertising. Pages are served by Cloudflare, which keeps standard, short-lived server logs. The map on contractor pages loads its background tiles from OpenFreeMap when you scroll to it, which sends that provider a normal web request. The search runs entirely in your browser. The "Request a county" form sends us the state and county you chose and any note you typed, as an email; it does not ask for your name or email address. Your internet address is used only to limit how many requests one connection can send in a minute, and is not kept.
Replies and error reports
If you send a reply or an error report, we keep your name and contact details only to handle that request. We do not share contact details with anyone.
